How it works

Three stages, cheapest first. Almost every search is answered by the first one, and the later stages only run when the earlier ones found nothing.

Spelling

Alef forms, ta marbuta, alef maqsura, diacritics and tatweel are all folded to one canonical form, so عبايه and عباية are the same word. Matching then runs on trigrams, which handles partial words and prefixes.

Typos

Trigrams are weak at letters swapped in the middle of a word. فسنان is a single keystroke away from فستان and trigrams score it poorly, so a second pass measures edit distance instead.

Meaning

If nothing matched by spelling at all, the query is compared by meaning rather than letters, which is how سروال finds بنطلون. This stage only runs on searches that would otherwise have returned nothing.
